SOCIAL SUPPORT
We at AKi extend support to families of children with disabilities by having regular grandmothers’ and mothers’ meetups to give emotional support to each other. There is a monthly birthday party where every child has the chance to blow out candles on a cake and socialize. Annual family event on World Cerebral Palsy Day – magicians and candy floss are particularly popular amongst children and parents alike. Siblings are particularly encouraged to attend our celebratory events.
Mothers and Grandmothers meetup
Families with a disability almost always spend more on health which may increase their risk of being pushed into poverty. Conversely, poverty can increase the likelihood of having a disability. Disability and poverty reinforce each other. A majority of the families we treat at AKi are food insecure and may be supported via:
- Monthly ration or cash grants to families who are severely food insecure
- Transport allowance (where fathers are daily wagers, unemployed or deceased)
- Cost for medicines and laboratory tests
- Shoes, diapers, biscuits for instant energy
- Fundraising for surgeries
- Antenatal care for mothers
- Referrals to a specialist for epilepsy management
