Orthosis comes from the Greek word ‘ortho, which means “to straighten” or “correct.” An orthosis is an externally worn supportive device for body parts that have been weakened by injury or nerves, muscles, or bone disorders. Custom-made or prefabricated orthoses support, align, prevent, or correct the function of a body part, such as limbs, spine, or joint.
These specialised devices play a crucial role in improving mobility and overall quality of life for children with disabilities. Orthoses are used to:
• Improve mobility and balance
• Support weak, deformed, or injured muscles or joints
• Reduce pain and discomfort
• Prevent further injury or deformity
• Enhance functional abilities
At AKI, we have a fully functional orthotics workshop in addition to our casting and modification rooms. This is an exciting new service that became fully functional in 2019.We offer a variety of orthotic devices for diverse problems, such as:
• Children with partial paralysis in the legs because of damage to the spinal cord from birth (Spina Bifida).
• Children who toe walk because of neuro-muscle disorders-they have poor balance and are delayed in their walking.
• Children who have excessive muscle tightness (spasticity) – cannot grasp things with their hands or get their feet flat on the floor when they walk.
Children with disabilities need extensive support in the form of orthotic devices in addition to regular physical therapy sessions. If a child needs orthotic support, our team of certified orthotists, registered technicians, and the child’s therapist work together to provide customised orthotic solutions that are designed and fabricated to help children achieve their functional goals.
